WORKSHOP METHODS
THE BATTLE
«The Battle» is a method for decision-making. The goal is to guide a group through a decision-making process. And one thing is certain – this method is effective and fun.
It is not always easy to reach a decision and come to an agreement on different variants of a solution in a meeting while hearing all the arguments. However, this method manages to do just that, and it is very engaging and effective.
PREPARATION
The starting point consists of several variants of a solution that have been presented or jointly developed. Each solution requires a group to advocate for «their» solution. Additionally, a decision-maker or decision-making panel, «the jury» is designated.
EXECUTION
All groups receive a predefined amount of time to gather arguments for the implementation of their solution. Meanwhile, the decision-making panel develops a list of criteria by which the solutions will be evaluated.
After the time has elapsed, all groups meet in a room and have the opportunity to compete against each other and make a plea for their solution. The decision-making panel notes the degree to which each group and solution meets their criteria. After a discussion, the panel announces the «winner» and thus the solution that will be pursued further.
EXPERIENCE WITH THE METHOD
«The Battle» requires more effort in preparation and moderation. The advantage of this method is that it encourages the search for arguments even for solution proposals that do not seem advantageous at first glance. The group receives a comprehensible decision for the solution that will be further developed. I recommend including the actual «decision-makers» of the group in the decision-making panel.
