UX METHODS

USER SCENARIOS

What does the user want? How can my product or website best fulfil their needs? The use of user scenarios in the UX design process is one way of gaining a better understanding.

User scenarios/storyboarding

USER SCENARIOS ARE SHORT STORIES

User scenarios are short stories that show how, why and in which situation a user accesses a website or uses an application. They describe how he/she proceeds to achieve the desired goal and what challenges need to be overcome.

User scenarios can be described in short texts or visualised as storyboards with sketches.

VORGEHEN

The following questions/topics must be clarified in advance:

  • Who are the users? User scenarios are based on the goals and tasks to be accomplished by the users. Data-based personas (archetypes of the target groups) represent these.

  • What goals and tasks do users want to accomplish? This provides a list of prioritized goals and tasks.

Then the scenarios can be effectively created in a workshop. The personas and worksheets with the tasks will be provided. The scenarios are described in 3 to a maximum of 6 steps or visualized with the help of small sketches. It is not about having special artistic skills. However, the sketch can help to better immerse oneself in the situation.

The scenarios are worked on in teams and then presented and discussed in the plenary.

USAGE

User scenarios, like personas, are a useful tool during the analysis phase of a project:

  • Understanding how a user’s journey to the digital product looks and how they use it

  • Ideation for new features

  • Structuring and prioritizing content

  • Identifying weaknesses and potential solutions (from the current to the ideal state)

In the conceptual phase, these scenarios are explored using clickable wireframe prototypes to test various ideas.

Finally, different solutions based on the scenarios can be tested and evaluated with test users in a usability test.
